Simple Maple Flavored Syrup in a Mason Jar

THE RECIPE THAT INSPIRED THE ERGO SPOUT®

This is the maple flavored syrup recipe that inspired the Ergo Spout®.  (You can read about how this simple recipe lead to the creation of a unique mason jar attachment here.)  It’s simple, economical and delicious!  In fact there may not be an easier or more economical way to drown your pancakes in maple deliciousness.  You can pour as much syrup as you’d like without having to worry about the price tag of the real stuff.  This is one of the reasons this recipe is perfect for kids!

WHAT KIND OF SUGAR SHOULD I USE FOR?

The recipe calls for 2 cups of sugar.  Basic white sugar works really well because it dissolves quickly in water.  However, if you like the notes that molasses can add to a recipe then you can try your had at using brown sugar.  Turbinado sugar or “raw sugar” can also be used.  It has a different flavor as well.

WHERE CAN I FIND MAPLE FLAVORING FOR SYRUP?

Maple flavoring can be found on the baking isle of your grocery store by the other extracts and flavorings.  In fact, if you can find vanilla, then you will likely be able to find maple flavoring.  If you grocery store doesn’t carry maple flavoring then it can easily be found online on Amazon or at another retailer.

WHY TO YOU ADD SALT TO MAPLE FLAVORED SYRUP?

While salt isn’t a strictly necessary ingredient in this recipe, I like to add it for a few reasons.  First, salt is a flavor enhancer so it can bring out the other flavors in the syrup.  Second, I think a bit of salt can cut the sweetness of the sugar.  Last, I just feel fancy when I add a pinch of salt to a dish.
